Pacifica’s Tasty New Line of Flavored Lip Balms

As a working makeup artist, I ALWAYS begin every makeup application with two things: moisturizer and lip balm. Great makeup begins with great skincare. This is why I couldn’t have been happier to learn that Pacifica came out with a new line of 100% vegan lip balms. As far as lip balms are concerned, there usually isn’t much variety, but these new flavored balms change the game. Their new line-up is exclusive to Ulta, and includes seven lip balms: Persian Cherry, Hawaiian Banana, Bali Coconut, Cuban Mango, Rainbow Watermelon, Indian Chi, and Summer Kale, as well as a Candied Lemon & Sugar lip scrub. The fact that the collection includes a scrub made my heart smile! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a client that really needed a good scrubbing.

Pacifica was awesome enough to send me over the collection to test out, and I have to say that I’m in love! You already know that the first one I had to try was Summer Kale – you can’t put some kale lip balm in front of me and not expect me pounce. It has a very earthy, natural scent to it that I really like, it totally brought out my inner hipster. Surprisingly though, my favorite one is the Bali Coconut; I’m usually not a huge fan of coconut fragrance, but this one is so yummy. A lot of the others have a refreshing fruity aroma, so there’s truly something for everyone. A far departure from many of the cherry cough syrup scented balms that we have become accustomed to.

Almond and jojoba oils ensure that these balms are super hydrating, and absorb right into your lips for all-day moisture. Since I use lip balm before lipstick, having a colorless formula that leaves the lips supple, while also remaining completely matte is a win for me!

This Vibrating Hairbrush Can Detangle Any Hair

There’s a cool, detangling tool designed specifically for curly girls. Remington has introduced an electric, vibrating brush called Tame the Mane. Whether you have loose waves, ringlets, or natural kinks and coils, this brush is designed to make your life a hell of a lot easier.

retouched brushThe cordless brush is battery operated, so it travels very easily. After a workout or on a hot day were you’re hair isn’t behaving, you can break out your Tame the Mane to make your curls behave. And you can’t go wrong with it’s affordable $19.97 price tag.

Tame the Mane can be used on wet or dry hair, but in my personal experience, wet hair is way more prone to breakage. Usually, when detangling, it’s the smartest to start at the tips and work your way up to the roots; but that technique isn’t necessary with this magical brush. You can just let it run through your hair from the root down to the tips, the vibrating teeth do most of the detangling work for you. I know the thought of your hair getting tangled in this spinning contraption is probably at the forefront of your mind, but it actually glides through the hair easily – those folks at Remington sure know what they’re doing.

The Only Thing You’ll Ever Need to Clean Your Brushes

Simple SkincareWhen it comes to deep brush cleaning, we all try to find an option that will be gentle on the brush hairs. After all, no one wants their brushes to end up feeling like sandpaper against their face because of crappy maintenance. Initially, I used to use plain soap and water, then I upgraded to baby shampoo, followed by conditioner in the rinse water to keep the hairs as good as new – but it didn’t. I always say that if I become a mom, I hope to love my kids as much as I love my brushes…totally serious by the way!

After being frustrated with my brushes becoming increasingly course despite my efforts, I tried something new. I tested the same cleanser that I use on my face (especially when it resembles alligator skin) on my brushes, and it worked like a MF. The miracle product I’m referring to is Hydrating Cleansing Oil by Simple Skincare. It’s infused with vitamin E and grape seed oil, so your brush hairs get a lot of extra love. Cleansing Oil gets all of the makeup out of your tools, while leaving them super soft. This drug store item comes in at only $9.99 , making it the most affordable option ever.

To get your brushes in tip top shape, squeeze a dime sized amount of Hydrating Cleansing Oil in the palm of you hand, and rub your fluffy friend in the cleanser in a circular motion. You will notice that suds will begin to form, and all the yucky build-up on your brush will disappear. Once your tool is cleaned to your satisfaction, rinse it off with lukewarm water, and repeat for the rest of your brushes. For the smaller ones (like lip and liner brushes), I like to clean several at a time to speed up the process.

Once your brushes are dry, they’ll be immaculately clean and softer than ever!

What Is This? The Micellar Water Edition

With so many new items constantly popping up on the beauty shelves, it’s really easy to feel like a complete idiot when looking at a product that you’ve never heard of.  The product of the moment is micellar water/micelle solution.  I honestly didn’t get this product either when I first laid eyes on it, so I did some investigating. My first question was is there a difference between micellar water and micelle solution, and the answer is hell no. What a brand calls it just depends on how bougie they want to sound, some brands even call it micellar cleanser – but it’s all the same thing.

Micellar water is a hydrating alternative to tradition makeup removers and face wipes, that uses micelles as its active ingredient. I know what you’re thinking…WTF is a micelle?  Micelles are tiny oil molecules that attract and absorb dirt and oil; they are able to remove impurities from the face without drying out your skin. All you need to do is soak a cotton pad (I prefer cotton pillow squares myself), and wipe away makeup and dirt – no rinsing required.  Pretty cool, right?

Not only can micellar water be used as a makeup remover, you can also use it as a daily cleanser. It’s perfect for washing your face at the gym after a sweaty workout, or anytime you want a quick refresh when your skin feels gross. I low key found another use for it while in a crunch on set – it cleaned TF out of my makeup brushes! One of favorites is by Bioderma, but drug store options are available from brands such as Garnier.

A Gorgeous Bridal Updo in 6 Easy Steps

Wedding Updo hairWith engagement season in full effect, a bridal updo post is in order. I’ve been doing wedding trials non-stop, and I recently did an updo that is perfect for anyone with shoulder length to long hair. This classically pretty style can be done in about 30 minutes and is sure to last throughout the whole day. For this style you’ll need: a 1” curling iron, medium hold hairspray, a brush, a comb, and plenty of bobby pins.

  1. Start off by spraying the hair with a medium hold hairspray of your choice (ECRU New York is one of my favorites), and brushing it through to distribute it evenly throughout the head. This gives hair memory, so that the curls that you create last.
  2. Use your 1” curling iron to curl all or your hair in the direction going away from your face.

  3. Take a horseshoe section of your hair in the middle of the crown, tease it with your comb to create a little height, and pin it into place in the back.
  4. After you pin the section at the crown, you’ll be left with two sections hanging on the sides in the front of the head. Twist each one of those sections and pin them in the center back of the head.
  5. Finger-comb through all of the curls in the back to break them up create texture, then pin the curls up loosely in the back. Use as many bobby pins as necessary until the style feels secure.
  6. Pull out a few wispy strands out around the face and at the nape of the neck to create a romantic look; and give the hair a final spray to hold the style in place.

A Smart Mirror That Makes Sure You Always Slay

Panasonic has developed some really cool beauty technology products recently, but their latest is sure to be the biggest hit yet. The Japanese tech company has answered every woman’s prayers, by creating a smart mirror that identifies your flaws…and immediately corrects them!

In true Snow White fashion, this mirror is completely honest with you about your reflection, so proceed with caution. Once you sit in front of it, the mirror scans your face to analyze your flaws (blemishes, wrinkles, etc). When it’s finished lowering your self esteem assessing your skin, it prints out the exact amount of makeup you’ll need to be applied to your face on temporary tattoo patches. Yes, it prints the actual products that it wants you to use, to stick to your face! How fierce is that? Don’t get too excited yet, the mirror is still a prototype, so it currently takes 24 hours to print the makeup patches. But we’re waiting with bated breath until they work out all the kinks, and bring it to market.

New Makeup Trend Alert: Eye Strobing

Photo: Rex

As if we really needed one, a new makeup trend of the moment has yet again surfaced. It was born as many of our favorite celebrities (like Jourdan Dunn and Rita Ora) put their best faces forward at the 2016 Met Gala. The trend of the moment is, wait for it…eye strobing (no, really!) Yes ladies, they found something else for us to strobe. For those of you who may not know what “strobing” is, it’s a trendy new way to describe highlighting. Last year, strobing was popular on the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose, in order to achieve a megawatt glow. Strobing is now back, making your eyes the focal point.

Eye strobing can be achieved by applying a shimmery eyeshadow, or even finely milled glitter to the inner corner of your eyes. The shimmer mimics light, thus making your eyes look bright – and dare I say angelic. If you want your “eye strobing” to look really intense use a metallic silver color, but for something a little more subtle go for gold and bronze shades.

DIY: Ridiculously Easy Half Up Bridal Hair

Wedding hair tutorial 31916Gorgeous bridal hair does not have to be overly complicated. You can achieve beautiful results without applying the old fashioned tricks that were formerly popular with brides. Today, women want hair that has beauty in its simplicity. Forced waves, crunchy curls, and elaborate designs are now a thing of the past. As a bridal hairstylist, most of my brides tell me that they want effortless-looking locks.  Here is a step by step on how to achieve this textured, minimalist wedding hairstyle in less than an hour.

What you will need:

Heat protectant

Volumizing spray or mousse

Medium Hold hairspray

Curling iron or curling wand (1” -1 ½” depending on hair length and desired waves size)

Bobby Pins

Dry Texture Spray or Sea Salt Spray

Hair Accessory (optional)

Directions:

  1. Spray hair generously with heat protectant.
  2. Apply volumizing spray or mousse to hair concentrating on the roots, and blow dry hair in an upward motion to create lift.
  3. Spray 1” sections of hair with medium hold spray and wrap each section around your curling iron or curling wand in the direction going away from your face.

*Use a 1” for shorter hair or if you want medium sized waves, a 1 ¼” or 1 ½” should be used for larger waves and/or longer hair.

  1. After all of the hair has been curled, run your fingers through the hair to break up the curls.
  2. Spray dry texture spray directly onto the hair or spray sea salt spray onto your hands and rub it into your hair to create lived-in texture.
  3. Take sections of the sides of your hair and pin them in the center back of your hair for a half up/half down look.

*Taking large sections creates a smoother look, and taking smaller sections creates a look with more definition

  1. This step is completely optional. If you want to dress up the style you can add an accessory or flowers in the center back of the head, right above where the hair was pinned – and you’re done.

I told you it was easy!
