textured hair boyDuring New York Fashion Week: Men’s S/S 2017 at the ultra-trendy Meatpacking District venue, Industria, Lead Hairstylist, T. Cooper of Metro Look, and her team were sponsored by ECRU New York and Conair to create wet natural textured hairstyles for the BENCH/Body show. Cooper named the style the “Au Naturale” and it was created using the ECRU New York products: Rejuvenating Moisture MistSilk Nectar Serum, and Sunlight Styling Spray. “Once I saw the models that were going to be in the show, I knew that I wanted to embrace their natural hair texture. BENCH Body casted a lot of models with the best curls that you’ve ever seen in your life! ” said Cooper.  The stylists sprayed the models’ hair with Rejuvenating Moisture Mist to hydrate and eliminate frizz from curls and waves. They then dried the hair from underneath with a diffuser to form curls and waves. The curls were then defined with a Conair Infinity Pro curling wand. Next, the models had Silk Nectar Serum applied generously to the hair for illusion of wet hair. Finally Sunlight Spray was used to keep the style’s shape. “The ECRU New York products worked perfectly for enhancing the models’ texture.” says CooperTextured Waves

NYFWM Makeup: Color at Carlos Campos

For Carlos Campos’s S/S 2018 show for New York Fashion Week: Men’s, the designer drew inspiration from the colorful, modern work of architect Luis Barragan. The collection consisted of strong but minimalistic styling with clean lines and vivid colors, which key makeup artist Dana Arcidy of Metro Look echoed in the makeup look she created for the models.

“The look is very wearable, because with such a strong collection, the focus needs to be on the clothing,” explains Arcidy. “But Carlos and I agreed that we needed to bring some color to the face this season in a simple way.” Her team used Catrice Cosmetics to execute two looks: one for the male models, and one for the female models.

For both looks, the skin was first perfected, a task made easier on the diverse cast of faces by using Catrice’s Make Up Transforming Drops in Lightening and Darkening. “These products are great for makeup artists and your everyday makeup lover,” says Arcidy. “Whether you bought the wrong shade of foundation or just got a little sun, you can alter the product to match your skin perfectly.” The Metro Look team kept the skin brighter in the center of the face and darker on the perimeters, to give skin dimension and a summery glow. They used their Contouring Duo Sticks to sculpt out the cheekbones in a nod to the strong lines of Barragan’s architecture. Then, on the high points of the cheekbones, they buffed on Highlighting Powder to add another layer of luminescence.

The models then had their brows lightly filled in and brushed up, using Eye Brow Stylist pencils that conveniently come with a spoolie on one end. The male models’ look was completed with a light dusting of Prime and Fine Mattifying Powder on the t-zone. For the female models, shades of brown from the Chocolate Nudes palette were feathered over their eyes and Gel Eyeliner was added to the upper lash line. Lashes were fattened up with Rock Couture Extreme Mascara.

The undeniable star of the look was the red lip. Arcidy and her team used Ultimate Stay in Behind the Red Curtain, a red that was flattering on every skin tone and reminiscent of the reds in Barragan’s work. With subtly emphasized eyes and strong, vibrant lips, the look was playful, wearable, and powerful, a perfect match for Campos’s new collection.

This Vibrating Hairbrush Can Detangle Any Hair

There’s a cool, detangling tool designed specifically for curly girls. Remington has introduced an electric, vibrating brush called Tame the Mane. Whether you have loose waves, ringlets, or natural kinks and coils, this brush is designed to make your life a hell of a lot easier.

retouched brushThe cordless brush is battery operated, so it travels very easily. After a workout or on a hot day were you’re hair isn’t behaving, you can break out your Tame the Mane to make your curls behave. And you can’t go wrong with it’s affordable $19.97 price tag.

Tame the Mane can be used on wet or dry hair, but in my personal experience, wet hair is way more prone to breakage. Usually, when detangling, it’s the smartest to start at the tips and work your way up to the roots; but that technique isn’t necessary with this magical brush. You can just let it run through your hair from the root down to the tips, the vibrating teeth do most of the detangling work for you. I know the thought of your hair getting tangled in this spinning contraption is probably at the forefront of your mind, but it actually glides through the hair easily – those folks at Remington sure know what they’re doing.

The Only Thing You’ll Ever Need to Clean Your Brushes

Simple SkincareWhen it comes to deep brush cleaning, we all try to find an option that will be gentle on the brush hairs. After all, no one wants their brushes to end up feeling like sandpaper against their face because of crappy maintenance. Initially, I used to use plain soap and water, then I upgraded to baby shampoo, followed by conditioner in the rinse water to keep the hairs as good as new – but it didn’t. I always say that if I become a mom, I hope to love my kids as much as I love my brushes…totally serious by the way!

After being frustrated with my brushes becoming increasingly course despite my efforts, I tried something new. I tested the same cleanser that I use on my face (especially when it resembles alligator skin) on my brushes, and it worked like a MF. The miracle product I’m referring to is Hydrating Cleansing Oil by Simple Skincare. It’s infused with vitamin E and grape seed oil, so your brush hairs get a lot of extra love. Cleansing Oil gets all of the makeup out of your tools, while leaving them super soft. This drug store item comes in at only $9.99 , making it the most affordable option ever.

To get your brushes in tip top shape, squeeze a dime sized amount of Hydrating Cleansing Oil in the palm of you hand, and rub your fluffy friend in the cleanser in a circular motion. You will notice that suds will begin to form, and all the yucky build-up on your brush will disappear. Once your tool is cleaned to your satisfaction, rinse it off with lukewarm water, and repeat for the rest of your brushes. For the smaller ones (like lip and liner brushes), I like to clean several at a time to speed up the process.

Once your brushes are dry, they’ll be immaculately clean and softer than ever!

Hair Tips From Ryan Nickulas

9

Ryan Nickulas, celebrity hairstylist

Most people may know Ryan Nickulas from starring in the hit LOGO series “The A-List: New York”, but aside from being a reality star, he’s also a badass celebrity hairstylist. The Massachusettes  native has styled the likes of Rachael Ray, Pam Anderson, and Isaac Mizrah – but his all-time favorite, VIP client was his mom (adorbs right?).

While maintaining star-worthy hair may seem like a chore, the New York City hairdresser swears it’s not as difficult as it seems.  Nickulas, who works at the Vidov Salon, believes that even a ponytail can slay. We recently caught up with this 16 year hair veteran to discuss his career, favorite trends, and simple ways to keep your tresses on point.

MLB: What inspired you to get into the beauty industry?

RN: It was just natural for me; grandmother was a hairdresser, so I just grew up around it. I was that 10 year old asking for highlights (laughs).

MLB: I know you’re originally from Cape Cod, but now you work at a swanky New York salon. Why did you decide to come here?

RN: I moved to New York for love. I had rekindled with my [now] husband, and followed him to the city. Being that I had a trade, I knew that I could do it anywhere. As a kid I always read fashion magazines and dreamed of coming here, so it all worked out.

MLB: What is your favorite hair trend right now?

RN: I’m obsessed with really, really, really long hair extensions like you’re seeing on the Kardashians and Nicki Minaj. I love the opulence of it, they’re so seamless and simple, yet avant garde – it’s amazing! I once did a 38 inch installation for a client, but getting in and out of a car and using the toilet with hair that long can be difficult  – you gotta be careful (laughs).

MLB: As spring approaches, what would you recommend for a woman to do to switch up her look in the new season?

RN: Everyone is cutting their hair. In the same breathe that I love a good 38 inches, the other flip of the coin is that a sleek cut is crisp and clean. J Lo just did it, she chopped her hair to her collar bone. For everyone’s sake, it gets all the dead ends off, and it makes for an easy color change. Chopping it off is a great way to feel fresh.

MLB: What is a simple hairstyle that any woman can do?

RN: If you have enough hair to fit into a ponytail, do a ponytail. I love seeing women’s hair up! It opens up the face, brings attention to the eyes, and it works for every lifestyle – whether you’re hustling or you’re bougie.  You can make it fun by using a curling iron to create texture.

MLB: What’s hottest trend in hair color?

signaturehits-winter-2013-beauty-shoot-241cropped

Hair by Ryan Nickulas

RN: Oh, that has to be “sombre”. That’s a subtle ombre that you can create with toners. It’s a simple way to ease into summer, it makes old color fresh again. If you look at the celebrities [their hair is] not jet black or over-highlighted, it’s kind of in between. There are highlights and lowlights in [the hair] but it’s all really tonal.

MLB: How do you keep colored hair super healthy?

RN: Always conditioning treatments, condition your hair often. A lot of women over-shampoo their hair, when they should be shampooing a maximum of twice per week. A lot of girls don’t realize that if they just get in the shower mid-week and rinse their hair well, put a conditioning treatment on and rinse that thoroughly, it will be enough to maintain healthy hair.

MLB: How do you feel about the pastel-colored hair trend?

RN: I think it’s on its way out, though Easter is around the corner (laughs). It’s out. It’s done. There are some really amazing hairstylists still doing it, and it’s great for Instagram, but the everyday woman is not doing it.

MLB: A lot of women of color are nervous about coloring their hair, especially if it’s relaxed. Is there a safe way for them to color relaxed?

RN: No, sorry. You really shouldn’t bleach relaxed hair, there are ways to lift the hair without bleach but they’re still damaging. When you add a heat style, on top of relaxer, on top of color, it’s not the best. It’s almost like just pick one (laughs). My best advice is don’t do it, but there are creative ways of adding color without actually coloring, like extensions.

MLB: Can you share some of your favorite hair product brands with us?

signaturehits-winter-2013-beauty-shoot-192cropped

Hair by Ryan Nickulas

RN: Yeah, I love Oribe and Goldwell. Goldwell is the hair color that I use, but they also have an amazing treatment line. I recently discovered Jen Atkins’, OUAI, and it a great line. It’s clean, crisp, and works across the board for most people.

MLB: What is the best hair advice that you can give women?

RN: Cut your hair! Whether it’s just a dusting or a trim, it really, really, really helps maintain the integrity of your hair. Like 90% of women skip out on cuts or push them back; when they should be trimming at least every 3 months.

What Is This? The Micellar Water Edition

Photo Credit: Natural Hair Growth 101

Photo Credit: Natural Hair Growth 101

With so many new items constantly popping up on the beauty shelves, it’s really easy to feel like a complete idiot when looking at a product that you’ve never heard of.  The product of the moment is micellar water/micelle solution.  I honestly didn’t get this product either when I first laid eyes on it, so I did some investigating. My first question was is there a difference between micellar water and micelle solution, and the answer is hell no. What a brand calls it just depends on how bougie they want to sound, some brands even call it micellar cleanser – but it’s all the same thing.

Micellar water is a hydrating alternative to tradition makeup removers and face wipes, that uses micelles as its active ingredient. I know what you’re thinking…WTF is a micelle?  Micelles are tiny oil molecules that attract and absorb dirt and oil; they are able to remove impurities from the face without drying out your skin. All you need to do is soak a cotton pad (I prefer cotton pillow squares myself), and wipe away makeup and dirt – no rinsing required.  Pretty cool, right?

Not only can micellar water be used as a makeup remover, you can also use it as a daily cleanser. It’s perfect for washing your face at the gym after a sweaty workout, or anytime you want a quick refresh when your skin feels gross. I low key found another use for it while in a crunch on set – it cleaned TF out of my makeup brushes! One of favorites is by Bioderma, but drug store options are available from brands such as Garnier.

A Gorgeous Bridal Updo in 6 Easy Steps

Wedding Updo hairWith engagement season in full effect, a bridal updo post is in order. I’ve been doing wedding trials non-stop, and I recently did an updo that is perfect for anyone with shoulder length to long hair. This classically pretty style can be done in about 30 minutes and is sure to last throughout the whole day. For this style you’ll need: a 1” curling iron, medium hold hairspray, a brush, a comb, and plenty of bobby pins.

  1. Start off by spraying the hair with a medium hold hairspray of your choice (ECRU New York is one of my favorites), and brushing it through to distribute it evenly throughout the head. This gives hair memory, so that the curls that you create last.
  2. Use your 1” curling iron to curl all or your hair in the direction going away from your face.

  3. Take a horseshoe section of your hair in the middle of the crown, tease it with your comb to create a little height, and pin it into place in the back.
  4. After you pin the section at the crown, you’ll be left with two sections hanging on the sides in the front of the head. Twist each one of those sections and pin them in the center back of the head.
  5. Finger-comb through all of the curls in the back to break them up create texture, then pin the curls up loosely in the back. Use as many bobby pins as necessary until the style feels secure.
  6. Pull out a few wispy strands out around the face and at the nape of the neck to create a romantic look; and give the hair a final spray to hold the style in place.
